English Voices

From Purcell’s solemn Remember not, Lord, our offences to Parry’s majestic I was glad, we journey through the evolution of English sacred music. Cecilia McDowall’s A Fancy of Folksongs adds a contemporary twist, weaving traditional tunes with fresh harmonies. Elgar’s From the Bavarian Highlands closes the program with a lively and lyrical homage to English pastoral life. Together, these works showcase the power and beauty of English voices through the centuries.

Nature’s Symphony
This concert explores the beauty of nature through music. Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture evokes the wild seascapes of Scotland, capturing the awe and mystery of the Hebrides islands. Dvořák’s Cello Concerto is rich with lyricism, inspired by the composer’s love for the natural landscapes of America. Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 rounds off the program, a work filled with warmth and pastoral serenity, often referred to as his “sunny symphony,” reflecting the calm and beauty of the natural world.

Family Christmas Concert
This festive concert brings together a lively mix of classical and festive favourites. Mozart’s sparkling Marriage of Figaro Overture sets a joyful tone, while Prokofiev’s Troika captures the wintry spirit with its sleigh-ride theme. Berlioz’s gentle Shepherds’ Farewell and Rimsky-Korsakov’s enchanting The Snow Maiden evoke the magic of the season. Alongside these, traditional carols and Christmas classics are not to be missed! Children will also enjoy a special tour of the orchestra, making this a celebration for all ages!

Rossini, Mozart and Haydn!
This program highlights the elegance and vibrancy of classical music. Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto showcases the instrument’s lyrical beauty and virtuosity. Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture brings lively, energetic bursts of melody and humour. Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, also known as the “London Symphony,” concludes the concert with its grand, symphonic brilliance and joyful spirit. Together, these works celebrate the timeless charm of the classical era.

Our finale of the season presents a captivating blend of masterpieces. Holst’s Somerset Rhapsody beautifully evokes the pastoral charm of rural England. Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances infuses the evening with its dynamic rhythms and exotic flair. The program culminates with Beethoven’s grand Symphony No. 9, featuring the iconic choral finale that celebrates the triumph of human spirit and unity.
