On Saturday 14th October 7.30pm Seán Purtell takes up the bass soloist role for Mozart’s Requiem in Godmanchester.
Seán is a British-Irish bass studying with Giles Underwood at the Royal Academy of Music, and it was here that he first completed his undergraduate degree and is now continuing as a postgraduate.
Growing up in Croydon, his original training was as a pianist, under renowned cellist, pianist, and also founder of Music in Vision, Kathleen Ross.
Seán enjoys a wide range of repertoire, but he is most passionate about promoting new and rarely performed music and in the past few years has given premieres of song cycles, operas, and choral
anthems. As well this, Seán enjoys writing and researching about modern interpretation for well-known repertoire.
He has performed internationally as a soloist, and most recently has performed the role of Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni), in Trieste, Italy with OperUS, as well as a chorus member for the
Den Jyske Opera’s production of Tosca in Aarhus, Denmark. Seán’s other roles include Claggart (Billy Budd), Don Alfonso (Cosi Fan Tutte) Royal Academy of Music Opera Scenes, Private Willis (Iolanthe) Green Opera. He has also performed in masterclasses with Barbara Frittoli, Luca Pisaroni, and Lucy Crowe. He is also a member of the early music consort, The Queen’s Chappell.
Seán’s upcoming performances include Bass Soloist of Mozart’s Requiem with us, Bass soloist with Hampstead Chamber Choir, the role of Sulpice (La Fille du Régiment) in the Royal Academy of Music Opera Scenes, and returning to Martinu’s The Greek Passion and Madama Butterfly.
Outside of singing, Seán is a coffee connoisseur, football enthusiast, and he enjoys bringing new audiences to classical music.
